Ceramic Sole           瓷履

Ceramic Sole (瓷履)is an innovative art project that bridges the realms of traditional Chinese ceramics and modern footwear design, creating a unique fusion that explores cultural heritage in a contemporary context. Inspired by the historical 花盆底 (flowerpot bottom) footwear, which symbolizes elegance and status, this project reinterprets these traditional forms through a modern lens, offering a fresh dialogue between the past and present

The project intricately combines ancient Chinese motifs and patterns with various ceramic techniques such as slip casting, molding, and engraving. These elements are layered with care, from the raw texture of the clay to the nuanced applications of underglaze, glaze, and upper glaze. The result is a rich, tactile experience that not only celebrates the beauty of traditional craftsmanship but also reflects the inevitable passage of time. The deliberate inclusion of slight imperfections and damage within the pieces speaks to the fragile nature of cultural preservation, symbolizing how cultural identities can fragment and evolve over time.

Ceramic Sole goes beyond static art by introducing an interactive and customizable experience. The design features modular components—the bottom vase and the upper shoe—that can be separated and recombined. This allows viewers to actively engage with the work, mixing and matching different designs to create their own unique combinations. This interaction symbolizes the fluidity of culture, inviting participants to explore how traditional elements can be reimagined in today’s world.

Through this project, Ceramic Sole not only honors the depth of Chinese cultural heritage but also challenges the viewer to consider how culture is constantly being reshaped, both by time and by individual expression. It is a celebration of the old and the new, the perfect and the imperfect, and ultimately, the enduring nature of cultural identity.
