Mother-of-Pearl — The “Luo Dian” Collection

“Luo” refers to seashell, while “Dian” means inlay.

Luo Dian (Mother-of-pearl inlay) is a time-honoured Chinese craft. Archaeological finds show that the world’s earliest mother-of-pearl artefacts were excavated from the Shang dynasty, over 3,300 years ago in China. In those days, delicately polished shells were prized not only for adornment but also served as a form of currency. The technique later travelled along cultural routes across Asia, radiating its lustre far beyond its birthplace.

With deep respect for this tradition, I returned to China to study the craft at its source. Using the most classical processes and tools and weaving them into my ceramic practice, I re-imagine the beauty of Chinese craftsmanship. In the shimmering light of mother-of-pearl, these works bloom anew within a contemporary artistic language.

Preserving and Passing On Chinese Culture

Tradition & Heritage

In classical Chinese culture, mother-of-pearl can be inlaid into wood or lacquer. Shells are polished until they are as thin as a cicada’s wing, then meticulously carved into minute shapes—dots, washes, hooks, strips, and beyond. These slivers are joined so fluidly and with such finely balanced colours that the craft becomes a kind of painting, with mother-of-pearl standing in for pigments on the artisan’s palette.
